On the Importance of Local Sources of Radiation for Quasar Absorption Line Systems

چکیده

A generic assumption of ionization models of quasar absorption systems is that radiation from local sources is negligible compared with the cosmological background. We test this assumption and find that it is unlikely to hold for absorbers as rare as H I Lyman limit systems. Assuming that the absorption systems are gas clouds centered on sources of radiation, we derive analytic estimates for the cross-section weighted moments of the flux seen by the absorbers, of the impact parameter, and of the luminosity of the central source. In addition, we compute the corresponding medians numerically. For the one class of absorbers for which the flux has been measured: damped Lyα systems at z ≈ 3, our prediction is in excellent agreement with the observations if we assume that the absorption arises in clouds centered on Lyman-break galaxies. Finally, we show that if Lyman-Break galaxies dominate the UV background at redshift 3, then consistency between observations of the UV background, the UV luminosity density from galaxies, and the number density of Lyman limit systems requires escape fractions of order 10 percent. On the Importance of Local Sources of Radiation in Cosmological Absorption Systems

An upper limit to the importance of local sources of radiation compared to the cosmic background in cosmological absorption systems is derived, as a simple consequence of the conservation of surface brightness. The limit depends only on the rate of incidence of the absorbers and the mean free path of the radiation. It is found that, on average, the ionizing radiation intensity from local source...

Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks

A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...

High Redshift Hi 21cm Absorption toward Red Quasars

We have searched for redshifted absorption in the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen toward 'red quasars', which are extragalactic radio sources with a steep spectral drop between optical and infrared wavelengths. The success rate for detecting HI 21cm absorption toward a representative sample of such sources is 80%. This compares to the much lower success rate of 11% for detecting HI 21cm absorpti...

Redshifted Neutral Hydrogen 21cm Absorption toward Red Quasars

We have searched for redshifted neutral hydrogen 21cm absorption toward sources from the Stickel et al. (1996a) ‘red quasar’ sub-sample. The red quasar sub-sample is taken from the 1 Jy sample of flat spectrum radio sources, and is comprised of the 15 sources which are undetected on the POSS. Five of these red quasars have been searched for redshifted HI 21cm absorption to optical depth levels ...
